houses at Riva del Carbon

Compare Notebook M p.125 and the reference to Bit Book p.79L at Notebook M p.209L.

Ruskin’s comparative method is illustrated at Notebook M p.179 where he attempts to identify Byzantine features and their sequence by comparing ‘fragments at Riva del Carbon’, and elements of Fondaco dei Turchi, Police House, ‘that opposite the Post Office’ (i.e. opposite the Palazzo Grimani), and a ‘house close to the Miracoli’.

The fragments at the Riva del Carbon (Nadali & Vianello (1999) Tav. 29) are presumably the cornice at San Marco 4635, and the decorative fragments at San Marco 4640, see Lorenzetti (1903) pp.466-7).

The ‘Byzantine’ Palazzo Loredan and and Palazzo Farsetti are on the same Riva.
