Sketch No. 23

‘Sketch No.23’ is a side heading, and an inserted note on Notebook M2 p.23. There is no other evidence in the Notebooks of a numbered sequence of sketches. ‘No.’ followed by a number is Ruskin's normal way of referring to the Sheets. A possible meaning would therefore be that there was on Sheet No. 23 [n/a] a sketch of the bracket and cornice to which he refers on Notebook M2 p.23. However, this sheet, though its whereabouts is unknown, is described in some detail at Notebook M pp.44f, and what is described there is not what is described here.
