7th. On Grand canal

Palazzo Orio Semitecolo Benzon (Dorsoduro 179, Nadali & Vianello (1999) Tav. 51) based on Ruskin’s description of the number of windows on the first floor ‘six in a row’ and the second floor windows consisting of ‘Two at. two det. of fourth order’. The Piano Nobile has a six-lighted window. The building next to it is in fact the Palazzo Genovese (built 1892) on the site of old buildings. Following, there are other palaces, Palazetto Nani Mocenigo, House on the Calle del Traghetto San Gregorio, Casa Santomaso, and then the Palazzo Orio Semitecolo. Judging from some other Grand Canal entries, Ruskin may have used the term ‘next’ in the sense of ‘next building of interest’, further along the canal on the same side.
