Linguistic indicators of point of view

Task A - our version

(A) The only thing that moved upon the vast semicircle of the beach was one small black spot.

The phrase 'the vast semicircle of the beach' suggests a large open expanse which is being viewed and 'one small black spot' suggests that the viewer has just seen something so far away that it almost cannot be seen properly - it looks like a black spot. From the (B) part of the extract it is also clear that the viewing position from which all this is seen is close to the remains of a stranded pilchard boat with which the viewer is already familiar. We will explore this issue of new and assumed information later on this page.
