General comments

The project is contained in a red, woven-fabric effect, matt textured, card ringbinder; it is spotless and looks brand new. Inside the binder, the pages consist of sheets of lined and plain A4 paper, inserted, back to back, in transparent plastic sleeves; the pages do not fill the binder; the project appears quite slim.

Most of the writing appears to be in either ink (cartridge or fountain ) pen, or fine blue felt tip (difficult to tell); in the notes below, this can be assumed unless otherwise indicated. Thick felt tips and pencil are used in a few places, and blue biro for much of the second half, and all the page numbers. The detailed ‘technical’drawings are carefully produced: finely outlined, using a sharp pencil, and shaded in with pencil and/or crayon, using much looser strokes. There is evidence of the use of a ruler in most drawings as well as for some of the underlining and for the chart (p30); a circular template or pair of compasses has been used for drawing wheels (p5,7); an eraser has also been used for alterations to earlier drafts (eg p17,19). There are also some imported materials: cuttings from photocopies (p10,11,21), and glossy photos (p19,26,27) all stuck down firmly, with glue.

Overall, this is a neatly and carefully presented piece of work; great care has been taken to draw things as accurately as possible, and an effort made to protect the pages.

Comments on specific pages

The writing is in very thick, glossy, black felt tip (could be a board marker), directly onto the front cover of the binder.

Words are outlined in pencil and coloured in using thick felt tips, in a variety of colours.

Interestingly, this is the only page on which different coloured felt tips are used, and it stands out as being rather ‘scruffy’ compared to the others; there are odd marks indicating slips of the pen, and the strokes used for the shading lack the delicacy and control of those elsewhere, suggesting that the child may find this medium more awkward to handle.

Part of the lower picture have been carefully drafted, using a soft, light stroke, with the final line then ruled over the draft. A circular template or pair of compasses has been used for drawing the wheels

Notice the change of tool, from felt tip to biro, in the middle of the first line and in the centre of the first paragraph, providing evidence of a break (or breaks) in the writing process, and indicating specific bits added later.
