Key to terms used in physical descriptions
The project is contained in a blue plastic A4 ring binder, with pages enclosed in transparent plastic sleeves. Unless otherwise stated, pages consist of sheets of white paper, and all writing is by hand, in black biro.

Main surface: smooth blue plastic A4 ringbinder cover; imported materials: photos of butterflies, cut (carefully) out of card and stuck onto plastic, with glue; note red biro marks on upper right wing of brown butterfly. (NB at time of writing, it's clear that there were more than 2 butterflies, but they have come unstuck -where are they now?) Words (author info) and picture (drawing of face): black biro on self-adhesive sticker, stuck partially over blue butterfly, then outlined in biro (outline follows edge of label, moving over file and butterfly, and at some points slipping onto the label itself -note lines indicating slip of pen in two places, top and bottom right of label); words: author and project title, in biro (by hand but not by child) on strip of paper cut out and inserted into plastic pocket along spine of file
page 1 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ KH51 index ]
main surface: lined A4 filepaper; words and underlining: black biro, underlining ruled; picture (drawing) outlined in pencil and coloured in with pastel crayon, on white paper, cut out (carefully) and stuck on (fairly firmly) with glue (note: crayon marks to left of picture, on lined paper, suggest that the picture was coloured in after the paper had been stuck down). Other observations: Indented marks where colour has not adhered to surface (top left) suggest previous marks (numbers?) have been erased before using the sheet for this drawing. The plastic sleeve, if held up to light, can be seen to be have words indented all over it, indicating that it has been used as a working surface at some point.

(note: careful, detailed work in pencil on p3, where pencil plays fairly strong role in finished picture, compared to pages 4 and 5 where pencil seems to be limited to providing a rough outline as a starting point, and there's much looser use of other materials reflecting different kinds of action involved in creation of picture)

Note: contrast in movement / action reflected in lines of chart. The other side of the page is blank.
page 8 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ KH51 index ]
Surface: plain white A4 paper; picture (drawing): outlined in pencil, coloured in with fibretip (appears incomplete; this suggests 3 stages in process: (i) pencil outline (ii) yellow fibretip (iii) purple fibretip
page 9 [ next page ] [ previous page ] [ top ] [ KH51 index ]
Surface: plain white A4 paper; words: black biro; underlining: below title: 2 lines ruled in black biro (forming top and bottom outline), coloured in with pink crayon; below words at bottom: single very faint ruled pencil line; pictures(drawings): leaves, branches and chrysalis: outlined in pencil, coloured in with crayon; cloud: outlined in crayon. Note: this page stands out as being the only page where these materials are used together; also note delicasy of line and careful control in drawing and ruling, compared to earlier pages (providing 'structural' detail rather than impression of 'texture').

Surface: plain blue A4 paper; picture (drawing and collage): butterfly: outlined in pencil; wings made up of layers of small pieces of green paper, cut out and stuck on with glue; spots and stripes in fibretip; branch: crayon; sun and cloud: very dry fibretip (red, yellow and turquoise) and crayon (brown); buddliea bush branches: biro beneath crayon, flowers: 2 layer outline, biro under fibretip, coloured in with crayon; wall: 2 layer outline, biro under fibretip, also small pieces of white paper, crayon shavings and crayon dust stuck on surface (spread with glue). Note: it looks as if glue was spread over the space, and shavings added, before the central area of the wall was drawn in (as the purple lines of the wall are drawn over some of the shavings), but lower down, the lines of the wall appear to be below the dust, suggesting that the dust was added later.

Plastic sleeve contains a selection of items, originally intended for display:
item 1: surface: white postcard size paper: words: biro, drawing (lines): biro and crayon
items 2-6 surface: white postcard size paper; imported material: photo, stuck on with bluetack. Note: bluetack marks on back indicate these were stuck onto another surface for display.
item 7: main surface: butterfly shape cut out of orange card (pencil line around edge shows use for guidance); small round self adhesive stickers stuck on; white postcard size paper stuck on (very securely) with glue; on paper: words: biro, drawing: biro, crayon and pencil. Note: it looks as if the pencil and crayon is beneath the biro, indicating this was added later
item 8: main surface: butterfly shape cut out of pink card (pencil line around edge shows use for guidance); small round self adhesive stickers stuck on; body and antennae coloured in with orange fibretip; two pieces of white paper cut out and stuck on (very securely) with glue: words: biro; drawings: on left: crayon, drawing on right: fibretip and pencil.
