2.10 A function diverging at a point

2.10 Example

The function f(x)=1/(x-2)f(x)=1/(x-2) is discontinuous at x=2x=2.The expression 1/01/0 is meaningless, so we take the domain to be A={x:x2},A=\{x\in{\mathbb{R}}:x\neq 2\}, and abbreviate this by writing

f(x)=1x-2  (x2)f(x)={{1}\over{x-2}}\qquad(x\neq 2)

and as usual the codomain is {\mathbb{R}}. Here x=2x=2 is an asymptote, and y=0y=0 is an asymptote as xx\rightarrow\infty.
