2.11 Tends to

The symbol \rightarrow is read as ‘tends to’. It is used in the contexts:

xx\rightarrow\infty means xx becomes large and positive;

x-x\rightarrow-\infty means xx becomes large and negative;

xa+x\rightarrow a+ means that xx approaches aa from the right;

xa-x\rightarrow a- means that xx approaches aa from the left

xax\rightarrow a means that xx approaches aa from either side.
