1.38 Geometric series

The geometric series with first term aa and common ratio rr is

a+ar+ar2+ar3+a+ar+ar^{2}+ar^{3}+\dots

To recognise a geometric series, consider the ratios of successive terms new/old, which should always equal rr. The geometric sum formula only works for convergent geometric series.

When -1<r<1-1<r<1, the geometric series converges with sum

s=a1-r.s={{a}\over{1-r}}.
