McCarten George Henry Francis Chief Engineer Artificer 270023 HMS 'Invincible', lost 31 May, 1916 at Jutland, age 39, Born at Combrooke, Warwickshire, served his apprenticeship with Mesrts Sharpe and Co at the Phoenix Foundry, Lancaster, worked at Vickers, Barrow and joined the Royal Navy 1900, awarded DCM. Son of the late Mr Edward McCarten who was warden of Bowerham Barracks for 20 years. His mother resides at 1, Gordon Villas, Lancaster.A brother of his was killed in the South African war, and a cousin, Lieutenant G H Walker of the 4th Battalion Kings Own Royal Lancaster Regiment was killed in Flanders a year ago.
