Artificial Uncial: Letter Forms
How does this script differ from Roman Uncial? Look at
individual letter forms.
Explain the nature of the differences:
is it essentially the same as Roman Uncial?
B. Individual Letter Forms.
- There are no absolutely new letter-forms. The main difference between this and
Roman Uncial is the elaboration produced by the ‘extra’ pen strokes which produce serifs:

- or, in the case of A, elaborate the narrow loop of the ‘left leg’ with
a fine flourish producing it downwards.
Only T has reverted to the Roman Square Capital form:
Serifs are of two main types:
- Flat horizontal strokes following the movement of the pen forwards.
- Triangular serifs:
used vertically to finish off thin horizontal pen strokes:
They can be used to create curved space inside the letter while leaving it
relatively oblong outside.
 |
The serifs on N run parallel to the diagonal. |
 |
Those on S create two parallel oval spaces. |
