This is the same question we discussed earlier, and the same example will do -

The different technologies used by:-

• a vinyl LP player
• a tape deck
• a cd / dvd player

Though I raise the same question in the two contexts, there are in fact two different underlying points.

For machine functionalism the point is that the same software can run on different hardware platforms.

For teleological functionalism the point is that different (teleological) functions can be carried out by different systems.
