I take it (C) is out because it might not have been a person but eg a tape-recorder (or parrot).
If (C) is out, (A) must be out.
I suppose it is conceivable that someone who has totally lost their hearing could nevertheless be convinced they had just heard something, so (D) is out.
But in 'being convinced', you are having a thought, and so must exist. So, if you accept that, then (B) is the best answer...
