Lancaster in the News

Lancaster physicists joined scientists from around the globe in Melbourne and Geneva this week to hear the long-awaited news that it seems the hunt for the elusive Higgs boson is over. Dr Harald Fox and Katy Grimm were at CERN for the announcement; meanwhile Professor Roger Jones was at the International Conference on High Energy Physics at Melbourne. Dr Fox gave interviews to BBC Radio Cumbria and Professor Jones was live on BBC Radio Lancashire on the morning of the announcement, 4 July.

Dr Caroline Gatrell (LUMS) was interviewed on BBC Radio 4’s Women’s Hour programme, on 2 July, on the topic of female breadwinners.

Dr Brian Davison (LEC) was interviewed live at Hazelrigg weather station about the recent rainfall for BBC Radio Lancashire, July 4.

Professor Cary Cooper (LUMS) was interviewed on BBC breakfast news about high school proms. He was also quoted in an article in the Independent, about a survey that has revealed that more than two thirds of UK families are living on the financial edge, and also interviewed on BBC Radio Wales about ‘procrastination’.

Professor Simon Bainbridge (English and Creative Writing) was mentioned on the ITV news website, 6 July, in an article about how a course he is leading on William Wordsworth’s poetry can help business people think about their priorities and their careers.

LUSU Involve and the University Sports Centre featured in a spread in the Lancaster Guardian, 5 July about children visiting the county from Chernobyl.

Professor John Quinton (LEC) was quoted in the Cumberland and Westmorland Herald, 30 June, about research into the reintroduction of farm ponds.

Dr Pragya Agarwal (FASS) was mentioned on the Driving for better business website, 20 June, about research which analyses the effects that sat navs have on people's driving abilities.

Research by Professor Eric Emerson and Dr Janet Robertson (FHM) in the Centre for Disability Research for The Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) which has found that adults with learning disabilities are ten times more likely than the general United Kingdom population to be blind or have some level of impaired vision, was mentioned on the NZG National Zorggids and Eyeline Magazine websites, Medical Express, the Lancashire Evening Post.

Dr Bernard Mostert (Physics), was featured on the Electronics on line website, about research into natural melanins such as squid ink being considered as new materials for bioelectronics.

Lancaster Alumnus Sonu Kaur, is featured on the Market Research World Net website, in an article about new the company’s new recruits. Also on the Propel Technology website.
