Welcome message from Professor Wendy Robinson, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education)
Welcome to the 2023 Lancaster Undergraduate Research Conference. Thank you all for joining the UG Research Conference, and for participating in what we are sure will be an excellent and rewarding event.
At Lancaster University, staff and students are all, at various levels, involved in the process of research. Of course, ‘research’ means something different in humanities subjects like history than it does in social sciences such as Economics – and something different again in the physical sciences such as Chemistry and Biology. Fundamentally, though, it involves thinking deeply about questions within your subject, pushing the boundaries of established knowledge, and sharing those results with others. And we’re all doing that: whether in the lab, the library or the lecture hall.
We’re lucky, at Lancaster University, to be part of a rich network of Partner Institutions around the world. Students are studying for Lancaster University degrees at Lancaster University College at Beijing Jiaotong University, China, Lancaster University Ghana, Lancaster University Leipzig, and Sunway University Malaysia – as well as in Blackburn College, Blackpool and the Fylde College, and UA92 in the UK. One of the great things about the UG Research Conference is that it brings that network of students together in conversation to meet and to learn from one another.
Being part of the UG Research Conference offers something for all undergraduates. By participating, you’ll develop valuable presentation and communication skills, gain an insight into possible careers in research, and receive advice as to how to frame the skills you are developing to potential employers.
On behalf of myself and the UG Research Conference organising team, we hope you will find this both an enjoyable and enriching experience.
