An interactive augmented reality mobile application educating on extinct and endangered animal species (AR World)

Introduction

With the danger of extinction looming over 26,500 endangered species coupled with the fact that over 99% of all species that have existed in the world are now extinct, it has become increasingly clear that humankind is losing these animals at an exponential rate (Greshko, 2019). While nothing can be done for the fallen animals, their memory may live on. And while the endangered species have low chances of repopulation, there is still a chance to bring them back. This project aims to face both challenges by providing interactive AR sessions with each animal the user selects, quizzing the user on the animals they have interacted with, and providing links to organizations fighting for the protection of endangered animals. Thereby raising awareness for the endangered animals and the conditions that earned them such a title, as well as educating the user on the extinct species and why they were wiped off the face of the earth.

Development

The app was built using Android Studio which is an IDE used to develop android applications. The application was specifically written in the Java language.

The ARCore SDK which was created by Google in 2018 was used for building the augmented reality portion of the application.

AR World was built primarily using these two platforms using an iterative waterfall software development methodology. Meaning the development process was divided into a series of stages, with each stage building on the previous one through feedback and iteration at each stage.
