Does a daily mindfulness session develop positive attitudes towards behaviour for learning?

Abstract

This aim of my Action Research is to determine whether a daily mindfulness session promotes positive attitudes towards behaviour for learning and the ability to self-regulate. Weare and Markham (2005) state there is clear evidence that such programmes are extremely effective in reducing negative behaviour in the classroom setting.

Social and emotional issues can have a major impact on the ability to have positive attitudes towards classroom learning and the ability to self-regulate. My project will be small scale and I will be using an interpretive approach to conduct my methodology. The nature of my research question lends itself to a qualitative approach as I will be considering perspectives from human thoughts and behaviours. I will be using primary data collected through observations and questionnaires to form my research. In order to support this research, I will triangulate this data with secondary data by reviewing literature and current data relevant to my research question.

The research is not fully complete, however early observations show that the mindfulness sessions are providing children with positive attitudes towards behaviour for learning. Data collected suggests that observations will continue to show that implementing a mindful session, has a positive and meaningful impact on the mental health and well-being of children.

The potential benefits of this research will encourage children to develop strategies to help self-regulate and encourage a whole school approach.
