How the implementation of a secure data collection process affects the user experience

Abstract

Data is the key to a thriving business; therefore, securing business data against unauthorised access, corruption, and theft, is vital to maintaining a competitive edge (Rajagopal and Ramesh, 2016). However, studies show that employees facing changes in the workplace, can experience an increase in stress, decrease in job satisfaction, and feelings of job insecurity (Bickford, 2005).

This research explores how security upgrades to a business data collection tool, impacts the user’s experience. The current tool has standard business security in place, but anyone from the business can freely access and edit the data, which compromises the data integrity. The proposed upgrades should resolve these issues; however, the business cannot predict how the users will be impacted by these changes. The results from this study could predict how the new tool implementation may be received by employees, which will allow the business to prepare accordingly.

Volunteers form the business were asked to complete a task with their assigned Data Collection Tool; either the original, or the more secure version. Participants were then asked to complete a questionnaire about their experience using their assigned tool.

The research is ongoing, but preliminary results are interesting.
