Fear of Missing Out and It's Relation with Problematic Social Media Usage and Phubbing

Abstract

Smartphones, alongside their endless functions, are a significant part of one's life. This convenience comes with a rise in problematic social media usage (PSMU) and phubbing, commonly associated with fear of missing out (FOMO). This study investigated the relationship between FOMO, PSMU, and phubbing. The gender differences for the variables were also investigated. A quantitative, cross-sectional approach was utilized, and collected through an online questionnaire. A total of 192 responses, (50% males), age ranging from 18 to 25 years (M = 20.21, SD = 1.59), were collected. Linear regressions showed that FOMO predicted of both PSMU (F(1, 190) = 59.82, R = .49, R2 = .24, p < .001) and phubbing (F(1, 190) = 79.57, R = .54, R2 = .30, p < .001). However, no gender differences were found for FOMO, PSMU, and phubbing. These findings were consistent and supported by past literature, serving as a valid contribution of data towards FOMO with its relationship with PSMU and phubbing, with recommended interventions. The lack of gender differences in this study has been reasoned with COVID-19 and cultural differences. Future studies should increase the scope of participants to increase presentability. Furthermore, future studies could provide more insight to certain generalized variables, such as phubbing, and to consider more demographic differences.
