This paper focuses on how chatbot technology can be used to implement the five interventions that are used to treat Social Pragmatic Communication Disorder (SPCD). The interventions are: augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), video-based instruction (VBI), comic book conversation (CBC), social skills groups (SKG), and social scripts (SS).
The AAC makes use of pictures, gestures, and other methods to enhance speech. The VBI makes use of videos to show how social behaviors happen, problem solving, and social understanding. The CBC makes use of comics to represent what a person might be thinking or feeling, which makes it easier and more attractive to follow. The SKG makes use of role-playing in a social environment to help the child learn from others. And finally, the SS is mainly to improve social and communication skills with the use of verbal and visual aids.
The purpose of this paper is to inform the computer science community about chatbot technology and inform them of the best ways to implement possible treatments for the SPCD. It also gives a brief idea on which chatbot platform to use to carry on any project.
