A good picture ... should be brought into being like a world
Beth Harland (1964 - 2019) and John Ruskin (1819 - 1900) invite us to reconsider what it means to build an image, and imagine a world.
Layering pencil, paint and photographic fragments, in Harland’s elegant compositions time and space are mobilised as materials themselves. Using Ruskin’s strategy of close looking, this exhibition explores how Harland’s work reaches beyond reflection, drawing us into the nature of seeing itself.
