Operational Decisions in Emergency Departments: How Can We Do Better?

Emergency Departments (EDs) are crowded places, where lives are at stake. As patients, we typically want to avoid them if possible. For management scientists and operational researchers, however, they are also fascinating environments because they are filled with challenging operational problems that are in desperate need of attention. In this series of lectures, we will describe the basics of ED operations particularly as they relate to the flow of patients from triage to discharge or hospital admission, highlight some fundamental questions that might be of particular interest to us as management scientists, and present some of the recent and ongoing research in this area.
