Senior Research Executive
ACCENT-MR (2022 – 2023)
Accent is an integrated and comprehensive Market Research Agency that tailors unique and insightful research programs. My role involved steering and contributing to multifaceted research projects within the utilities, energy, and transport sectors. As an example, I led the quantitative component of a survey for National Grid. The research provided a benchmark of public awareness and acceptance of household technologies such as heat pumps, electric vehicle charge points, heat stores, and smart thermostats. I also worked closely with Scottish Water on a choice modelling survey around the community impacts of pollution events.
Senior Evaluation Officer
SUSTRANS (2019 – 2022)
Sustrans is the charity entrusted with overseeing the UK’s National Cycle Network and promoting diverse forms of active transportation. I directed research on sustainable active travel, influencing national policies and practices. My role involved working closely with infrastructure delivery teams and evaluating the social and environmental impacts of their projects. As one of four Senior Evaluation Officers, I assessed the impact of a 51-million-pound infrastructure grant and a 30-million-pound temporary fund managed by Sustrans for Transport Scotland.
Public Panel Member
Scottish Centre for Administrative Data Research (Volunteer, 2019 – 2022)
The Centre conducts research using administrative data gathered from public bodies. As a member of the public panel, I was part of a team that advised the Centre on their ethics framework, which included policies for data anonymization, linkage between different organizations’ datasets, expectations of privacy, and research topics. This framework is used both by researchers at the Centre and across Scotland to ensure their research methods are appropriate, effective, and ethical.
Researcher
Transport Research Laboratory (2014 – 2019)
The UK’s Transport Research Laboratory is a non-profit research consultancy which delivers large-scale strategy projects in transport engineering, infrastructure, and travel behaviour for government, academic, and commercial clients across the world. Whilst at TRL:
- I was responsible for data analysis on a multimillion-pound consortium project using telematics and questionnaire data to understand consumer electric vehicle charging behaviour and journey patterns.
- I lead qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method research projects, including overseeing project logistics, designing research methodology, and effectively communicating the results to our clients.
- I applied clustering algorithms and regression analysis for studies looking to identify attitudinal and behavioural driving patterns that influence the risk of collision.
- I handled several ‘big data’ projects. As well as linking hospital admissions and police data sources using fuzzy logic, I also designed and deployed an SQL database to store large-scale location, charging, and other telematics data for a large-scale driver behaviour trial.
