Personal Profile

STOR-i PhD Student

My PhD project is entitled “Assessment of hazard and risk due to induced seismicity for underground CO2 storage and oil and gas production assets”. This is supervised by Prof. Jonathan Tawn, Prof. Peter Atkinson and Dr. Zak Varty. The project is partnered with Shell where I’m supervised by Dr. Ross Towe.

Currently, I’m working on extending a newly developed threshold selection method for fitting a Generalised Pareto distribution to the extremes of a dataset. This method was developed based on characteristics of the data available for induced seismicity at the Groningen gas field. My current research looks at using a similar approach in more general extreme value contexts.

Background

I graduated in 2019 from University College Cork in Ireland with a BSc in Financial Mathematics & Actuarial Science. Throughout the course, it was always the Statistics modules which particularly piqued my interest.

Following my graduation, I worked as a demonstrator and then, a part-time lecturer in the University in the areas of Business Statistics and Stochastic Decision Analysis. From March 2020 until September 2020, I also worked in the Health Service Executive in Ireland as a COVID-19 data analyst.

In 2021, I successfully completed the MRes year of the STOR-i program where we were introduced to a variety of material from Statistics and Operational Research. The MRes material is delivered in many different ways starting with taught material and working towards independent research projects with the opportunity to collaborate on group assignments, “Sprint” topics and work together in Problem Solving days throughout the year.

STOR-i was an obvious choice for me as I felt the collaborative nature of the program could really benefit me. Also, the opportunity to get a taste of different areas of research and the real-life impact of the research really excited me.

I concluded the MRes year by completing a PhD Research proposal where I reviewed the literature of Extreme Value Theory and Point processes and set out some ideas and directions for research during the PhD. I graduated from the MRes in December 2021 with a distinction.

Hobbies/Interests

Outside of STOR-i, I enjoy playing guitar and ukulele. I’ve always had a love for music and took up the guitar when I was 16 years old. I also have a passion for cooking and baking. I love being active, walking, and playing squash in particular.
