"I really valued the three-hour workshops. We were really encouraged to voice our ideas and opinions and that made me feel really valued within the module. The content of the module was also really engaging and that really helped myself and my other peers get really involved. A.Jarvis was really insightful and helped us to see many different viewpoints of certain issues and challenges that the UK and the world face in terms of carbon and climate change."
"The seminar style of delivery is excellent, it is a refreshing and engaging change of pace to lectures and one I thoroughly enjoyed"
"I found it an interesting interdisciplinary attempt to combine mathematical calculation with some qualitative thinking."
"The discussions we had were the best bit of my entire degree. I can't believe I went 3 years without ever being taught like this before!!"
"Amazing module where i felt challenged and like i actually was part of something. Other modules need to take a leaf out of Andrew Jarvis's book where he has conversations with us and challenges and tests our ability to be innovative and use information we have been taught over the years, not just regurgitate academic papers and write repetitive essays. I really liked the structure of a long seminar once a week. Really is one of the best modules I've done! Inspiring, interesting and fun"
"Really enjoyed how this module is different from all others. I found the debates in class very enriching, and the chance to get to know other students in the department was invaluable. It's taken until the end of year three for a real opportunity to get to know others thoughts, opinions and values... maybe this teaching style needs to be brought into modules in earlier years. You can learn so much by debating with people, challenging your usual perspectives and hearing from others who are more knowledgeable in different areas than yourself. Highly valuable module."
"the workshops were really engaging and gave me a passion for the subject, made me feel involved in the climate solution and gave me the feeling of agency in solving climate issues"
"Great module with passionate teaching. Very intellectually challenging but not off putting given support and help from staff. Loved the opportunity to tree plant, although worried I won't be able to attend given in the final week, maybe move this?"
"Really interesting. Learnt so much new stuff that i hadn't experienced before at all in my university time. Really friendly and fun lecturer"
"The teaching style was incredibly engaging - AJ is a wonderful teacher. The content was fascinating and the use of workshops over lectures allowed me to learn more than I have learnt in any other module. 380 is by far my favourite module I have ever taken."
"Loved this module, felt so engaging and well thought out, all really well grounded in relevant research and debates."
"Andrew is a very engaging and helpful man. His enthusiasm and knowledge is the best part of this module, he really makes an effort to keep you interested and get student thinking more deeply about issues and exploring interested. I have really appreciated the sessions from this module and commend Andrews teaching style!"
"The 3 hour weekly seminar with no lectures is an excellent way for a module to be run. Jarvis provided us with lots of useful resources to enhance our knowledge and then the workshops taught us real-world skills. No other module compares to this one in terms of providing practical skills. The module also helped me grow as a person and learn to work in groups. It is without doubt the best module I have taken in my 4 years. The tree planting is a lovely way to finish up and practice what we preach."
"Andrew Jarvis is a strange man and most of the people taking this module are also, societies definition, weird. It is a perfect match and Jarvis is excellent at bringing people out of their shell, developing thoughts and ideas, and teaching us that we are capable and intelligent humans. I wish that this module was 30 weeks long and the only module we had to take."
"Workshops, much better way to learn and engage with than lectures and I wish more courses at uni adopted this style. Teaching - clearly very passionate and dedicated a lot of time to this module for students' benefit." |
