Sports Centre Car Park News and Updates

Cars parked at Lancaster University

Due to unforeseen circumstances on several occasions this year, the Sports Centre car park has unexpectedly closed to maintain the safety and security of Sport Lancaster staff and customers.

Temporary Disruption

Temporary measures to prevent further disruption were actioned on Friday 24 January 2025, whereby the Bowling Green car park is closed overnight (6pm - 8am) Monday- Friday, and completely (day and night) at weekends. Sports Centre & Health Innovation visitors are asked to respect this temporary measure by vacating the Bowling Green car park before 6pm, Monday-Friday.

Future Changes

Following an increased level of disruption, the University is now planning long term preventative measures by means of major changes to the Sports Centre car park layout and access rules, such as;

  • Height restriction barriers
  • Designated parking zones
  • Traffic flow changes

All customers, including coach users and drivers of essential large vehicles, are being considered during the planning stages.

Lisa Coates, Head of Sport, commented:

“We appreciate that any change to parking arrangements may cause disruption, but we hope that our customers will understand our efforts to minimise disturbance. We are aiming to make the changes to our main car park as soon as possible, and so we will continue to update customers as we have more news.”

Sport Lancaster customers can park for up to two hours free of charge at the Sports Centre car park, subject to availability and restrictions. Security officers are in place to support Sport Lancaster’s efforts and may issue parking tickets to car park users who do not follow these rules.
