Join us for a festschrift to mark and celebrate the work of Professor Emerita Anne-Marie Fortier
In the wake of Brexit, the Nationality and Borders Act 2022, and the Illegal Immigration Bill, questions of who counts as British are never far from public view. But what can we learn from the longer histories of citizenship in the UK and further afield. This public panel discussion considers how we can make sense of present changes while remaining attentive to how the development of national citizenships went hand in hand with processes of exclusion underpin present-day inequalities in the global migration and citizenship regime.
Chaired by Professor Michaela Benson (Lancaster University), this panel discussion features Professor Anne-Marie Fortier (Lancaster University), Dr İdil Akıncı-Pérez (University of Edinburgh) and Dr Zainab Naqvi (Manchester Metropolitan University). Focussing on critical approaches to migration and citizenship panellists will consider the significance of colonialism to the development of citizenship in the UK and further afield and the implications of this in the present-day. Such themes have a particular resonance in the UK but as we discuss, they also extend to wider geographies in ways that are now coming more sharply into view.
The event has been organised by Dr Ala Sirriyeh, Dr Madeline-Sophie Abbas, and Professor Michaela Benson, and is funded by FASS Decolonisation Fund.
