Dr Steve Lane

Welcome from Dr John Childs

About me:

John Childs is the Director of Studies for the MA Political Ecology. He is a leading expert on the political ecology of resource extraction and has studied both large and small-scale mining, oil, and gas politics around the world. He is currently working on the politics of deep sea mining - one of the world's newest resource frontiers - and is motivated to highlight the voices of marginalised groups affected by the practice.

About the programme:

Political ecology aims to transform environment and society by analysing and challenging injustices and unequal power relations. Students learn to investigate how valuable natural resources are unevenly accessed and shared, giving rise to local and global inequities. This degree will develop critical social scientists capable of addressing urgent global challenges of climate change and justice.

Research group

Our Political Ecology Research Group is home to world-class teaching and research, led by highly influential academics. Professor Christina Hicks, a member of our group, was recently recognised as one of the world’s most highly influential academics, reflecting the impact of our work in this field

We are also proud to be a founding member of POLLEN, the world’s largest political ecology network, which connects scholars and practitioners globally to advance critical environmental research and action.
