Frequently Asked Questions

We understand that the idea of attending an interview can be daunting so we’ve compiled some frequently asked questions for you to help you get a better understanding of what your Interview Day will look like.

Do I need to prepare for the day?

We will have reviewed your application and are likely to ask about your interests so just be ready to talk to us about you. You are the specialist subject of the interview! We also need to know if you or your guest have any special/dietary requirements.

It is ok to be nervous about your interview. However, our staff are approachable and are happy to talk to you and answer any questions you have. The interview will be with an academic who, where possible, will have a similar interest to you so you will be able to explore your interests.

Do I need to bring anything?

No, just yourself and a guest if you would like. If you want to discuss any previous projects you have worked on, there is no need to physically bring evidence of this work in – just be prepared to talk about it.

What should I wear?

What you wear won’t have any bearing on the outcome of your interview so just wear what you feel comfortable in! This can be smart attire, casual or anywhere in between. As well as an interview, there will be some walking around campus and activities with current students so make sure you are comfortable whatever you choose to wear.

What will my guest do?

Your guest will stay with you in the morning, following lunch they have the opportunity to take part in a programme of activity separate to you and organised by the School of Engineering. There are also plenty of places on campus or the city to explore or relax if your parents aren’t planning on joining the event.

What else will we be doing on the interview day?

In the morning, you will take a tour of our University campus where you will also get to look at some of our award-winning accommodation. After this you will be provided with lunch and attend a talk by the Director of Undergraduate Admissions in Engineering. In the afternoon, you will then have your interview (this should last about 20 mins), take a tour of the Engineering Building and facilities, and engage in hands-on activity workshops.

Where do I park and can I stay over?

Travel and parking instructions will be sent to you a week prior to your selected interview date. If you need overnight accommodation, the University offers a convenient option at reasonable prices, details are on the University website.

When will I know if I have been accepted?

We aim to formally let you know the outcome within two weeks by letter. However, it is often quicker than this. You will also be notified by UCAS when your offer is made and/or updated.

What happens if I can no longer attend the interview date?

We understand that sometimes plans change, so please let us know so we can rearrange your visit. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us by emailing engineering@lancaster.ac.uk.
