Process Safety & HAZOP Workshop for Third-Year Chemical Engineering Students at Lancaster University

A large group of students and staff pose for a photo on a wooden staircase inside a modern university building. The group consists of young adults and faculty members wearing a mix of casual and semi-formal attire, with many sporting name tags. They are arranged in multiple rows, smiling at the camera. Led by Helen Conlin, the IChemE S&LP SIG facilitated the workshop, where third-year Chemical Engineering students collaborated with 13 practising process safety engineers from renowned companies such as RAS, Urenco, Vivergo Fuels Ltd, Morson Projects, Iconic Simulation Ltd, TUV Rheinland, and AstraZeneca. These industry experts brought a wealth of knowledge and hands-on experience, significantly contributing to the students’ learning in areas like risk assessment, hazard identification, and process safety management. Their expertise, dedication, and collaborative approach made the workshop both engaging and highly informative - a fact echoed by the positive feedback from the students.

The workshop featured interactive sessions including presentations, discussions, and group work. The day commenced with Process Safety lectures and career snapshot sessions in the morning, followed by the HAZOP workshop in the afternoon. During the latter, students were divided into eight design project subgroups. Each subgroup conducted HAZOP studies, presented their findings, and received valuable feedback from industry professionals. The insights gained will be directly applied to their third-year Chemical Engineering design projects. The workshop provided students with a valuable opportunity to connect with practising process safety engineers and explore potential industrial placement opportunities.
