Understand how bipolar affects your relative

Some people don’t like talking about their problems, but others are relieved to have someone to talk to. Just listening can be very helpful to both of you. It’s very hard to just listen, as our natural instinct is to want to do something active to help. Listening might help you better understand your relatives’ behaviour. It might also help them feel heard and cared for.

Sometimes talking is too difficult. Some people find it easier to share their feelings by writing them down, drawing pictures, or playing music. Timing is everything. If your relative is not ready to talk, accept this and offer again at a later date.
