It seems likely that this was the markett toune to which he came on ye markett day, and where he spoke after the lecture in the steeplehouse and had not much persecution. Askrigg was the main market town in the area, with a charter granted in 1587 for a weekly market on Thursdays, and a fair three times a year.
It was also a centre of transport, as the Roman road (Cam High Road) that ran from Bainbridge, site of a Roman fort, was the main route to Ribblesdale and Ingleton. In 1751 it became part of the turnpike road from Richmond to Lancaster. Hawes was less important, and was not granted a market charter till 1700. 1
