Sandes Hospital Gatehouse

This gatehouse and the Almshouses behind it were built by Thomas Sandes (Mayor of Kendal 1647-48) in 1663. (Again, the date-plaque saying ‘1659’ is a fake, or at least an incorrect copy.) Inside the archway is an almsbox with an iron lid surmounted by a 17th-century inscription ‘REMEMBER THE POORE’’.
