Engraved by S. Noble from a painting by Robert Carlyle (here spelt Carlisle) for John Britton and E. W. Brayley The Beauties of England & Wales 18 vols in 25 (London: Vernor and Hood, 1801–1815). This print dated Jan. 1, 1803.

Carlisle Citadel. The south entrance to the city was known as Botcher Gate or the English Gate. The city jail was just behind this.
