The Psychology of Pro-Social and Anti-Social Behaviour

Hooligans at a football match

Our theme explores the breadth and depth of human behaviours within society, covering a range of research into pro- and anti-social behaviours.

Our interests include:

  • Policing and Public Safety – exploring the relationship between the police and the public. Studying self-policing by the public and what makes bystander intervention successful or unsuccessful. Studying behaviour in high-risk and security settings.
  • Lying and Truth Telling – understanding when and why people might lie – and whether it is possible for humans to detect when a lie is being told. We study these processes in everyday life and in the context of police interviewing and security settings more broadly.
  • Moral Decision Making -focussing on moral decision-making and how it relates to the way we treat animals, the dietary choices we make, and our sustainability behaviour more generally. We also explore the moral dimensions of identity and activism and how scientists navigate the tensions between doing science and engaging in activism.
