A Lancaster University Management School podcast that shed light on business and sustainability issues is in the running for a top national award.

The Transforming Tomorrow podcast, from the Pentland Centre for Sustainability in Business, has been longlisted for the 2024 Management Publication of the Year, awarded by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), the British Academy of Management (BAM), and the Chartered Association of Business Schools (CABS).

Transforming Tomorrow is one of 19 nominees for the inaugural prize, which celebrates cutting-edge research and innovative thinking that informs policy, business, and third sector practices.

The podcast, hosted by Professor Jan Bebbington, Director of the Pentland Centre, and Paul Turner, Research and Engagement Content Manager in LUMS, launched in September 2023, and features 48 episodes across its first season, covering topics ranging from modern slavery to greenwashing, Lake District farming to salmon farming, sand to family businesses.

Each episode features Jan and Paul discussing a key area relating to business and sustainability, usually with an expert guest. Interviewees on season one included researchers from across Lancaster University, as well as academics from institutions including the University of St Andrews, Stanford University, and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, and practitioners from the worlds of accounting and farming.

Professor Bebbington said: “It is fabulous news for us to be included on the longlist for the Management Publication of the Year. Over the last year, Paul and I have had so many fascinating discussions with our brilliant guests, and learned so many things – and we hope our listeners have too.

“We have such great fun making Transforming Tomorrow, and we’re thrilled that something we take such enjoyment from is making such an impact.”

The longlist – which recognises three categories: - Sustainable Futures, SME Growth and Social Enterprise and Innovation – features blogs, books, articles, and podcasts.

The shortlist will be announced at the CABS conference in November, with the winner revealed at a ceremony at the British Library in early 2025.
