The Pentland Centre for Sustainability in Business and Work Foundation join forces for this Virtual Common Room - an opportunity to discuss job insecurity and employers' responsibility to generate decent work.

Nearly 2.6 million workers are economically inactive due to long-term illness and the cost-of-living crisis has made workers poorer. At the same time, businesses are struggling with staff shortages, retention issues and low productivity.

Against this backdrop, nearly one in five workers - 6.8 million people - are in severely insecure jobs, often characterised by low pay, unpredictable hours, poor protections, and limited career progression.

Job insecurity is not only harmful for individual workers but also for employers and the health of the UK workforce.

Join Jan Bebbington (Centre Director), Alice Martin, Emelia Williams and Asli Atay (the Work Foundation) in our Virtual Common Room as they share recent findings from the Work Foundation with Pentland Centre members and their wider networks to discuss areas of cross over and potential collaboration. We will cover 1) the role of managers and senior leaders in generating good, secure work, 2) results of a You Gov poll, in collaboration with Pentland Centre, on the financial wellbeing of workforces 3) key policy challenges in an election year: how to generate good work that benefits individuals, employers, and the economy.

We welcome staff across Lancaster University, and members of employer networks, to the discussion.

No need to register - just turn up. The platform we are using is MS Teams, which is free to download, and you can access the meeting at tinyurl.com/emp-res
