I previously studied for a BSc in Environmental Science and an MA in Landscape Architecture from the University of Sheffield. After graduating I worked in Landscape Architecture consultancy where I specialised in Landscape Character Assessment, Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment and Geographic Information Systems. I worked on large-scale renewable energy projects, as well as urban design and regeneration projects, and consulted with a range of stakeholders across local authority and statutory agencies. I then moved to the Ecosystems Knowledge Network where I gained experience in communications and knowledge sharing on ecosystem services, natural capital and green infrastructure.
My PhD research will focus on the role of soil in cities in providing ecosystem services. I will be developing an evidence base on the services provided by urban soils, determining the resilience of these to future change, and considering the options for enhancing the value of soil in cities for future planning and development. My research will form part of the ‘Soil Value’ project, funded by RCUK’s Living With Environmental Change theme, which furthers our ability to understand, manage and invest in soils as a critical infrastructure delivering vital services for society and the planet.
I am looking forward to studying here at the Pentland Centre because it gives me the opportunity to work within a multidisciplinary team, meet a broad range of people and allow my research to reach a wider audience, including businesses and decision-makers that are keen to engage with the environment.
