Spring 1996

News of CTI

Since the last issue of CTImusic News, Music Departments have dealt successfully with two major initiatives from the funding bodies, the first of which had a direct bearing on the second. Firstly, last Spring, the TQA came to its conclusion, with the welcome result that many Music Departments were deemed to be excellent in their teaching provision.

During 1995, CTI Music made a number of visits to departments - a part of our work which is always interesting and enjoyable. If any department would like a visit and software demonstration, do let us know. We have been pleased to see an increasing number of institutions appointing Learning Technology Support Officers; their insight enhances the contacts we already have with individual departments.

We have a newly constituted and enlarged Advisory Committee, chaired by Eric Clarke. This has met twice and is guiding the centre in a most helpful way. We have also received visits from music academics from Sweden, Australia and the USA. The most recent of these, Larry Peterson from the University of Delaware, gave a fascinating seminar at Lancaster on his work with Multimedia and Videodisc Resources for Music Education.

In November we co-ordinated a presentation at the joint CTI/TLTP conference 'Embedding Technology into Teaching'. A paper from this conference is printed in full later in the newsletter.

We have continued to provide support and evaluation for the TLTP Music Consortium and are helping to organise two seminar/workshops on the completed TLTP modules during the coming summer. More details of the modules which are now available are given later.

We are also hosting a seminar in Birmingham on the teaching of electroacoustic music - again more details later.

Finally, January brought the announcement of the Fund for the Development of Teaching and Learning. Bids to this fund could only be made from departments judged excellent in the TQA. We wish every success to the Music Departments who have bid for FDTL money and we hope to be able to maintain a close relationship with any projects which are funded.
