Bond-Node Structures 2018

Monday 4th–Wednesday 6th June 2018

The analysis of the rigidity and flexibility of bond-node structures and skeletal frameworks may be traced back to the fundamental theoretical work of Cauchy and Euler and their considerations of polyhedra with hinged faces. In more recent times periodic bond-node frameworks and their symmetries feature in crystal structure classification and crystal databases. Also, infinite bar-joint frameworks play a vital role in mathematical models for phonon modes and phase transitions, with framework bars representing strong bonds between atoms or rigid polyhedral units.

Following recent work of chemists and mathematicians, there is now great potential for novel methods in materials science which exploit new invariants, new approaches to rigidity and new understanding of symmetry and rigidity. At the same time, the computation of new mathematical indices and invariants will benefit from the computational methodologies in reticular chemistry.

This year's meeting will once again include an applied theme, namely entangled crystal frameworks, and it will bring together specialists in discrete mathematics, in rigidity and symmetry, and in reticular chemistry.

The workshop begins after lunch on Monday and finishes on Wednesday afternoon. The location is the Postgraduate Statistics Centre and all talks take place in the lecture theatre (room A54).
