Speaker: Jenny Pi (Oxford) Title: How similar are the von Neumann algebras coming from the free groups?

Abstract: In this talk, I’ll give an introduction to a famous open problem: are the von Neumann algebras coming from the free groups isomorphic or not? I’ll give some of the ideas behind the best-known result on this problem: the free group factor dichotomy of Dykema and Radulescu, before turning to a variant of the problem: do they even have isomorphic ultrapowers? I will discuss some results on the latter question, based on a joint work with Isaac Goldbring.
