Jade Li
Jade Li was awarded her thesis ‘Accident Tolerant Fuels (ATFs) and Atomically Entangled Futures: Exploring Nuclear Discourse through a Material Social Futures Perspective’ on 24/03/2024. Taking the material social futures perspective, the future of nuclear power is explored in ways that highlights the importance of ‘perceived nuclear power futures’ as well as empirical and theoretical modelling of new fuel types that shape or give empirical reality to energy choices. The thesis entailed a modelling-based investigations that are interleaved with social investigations into the perceived threats and possibilities of these fuels. Li has published in nuclear research journals and in materials science journals, amongst other places. She is now a policy manager at OfGen. She says: ‘I plan to progress in the Civil Service or in NGOs. The MSF has helped me be more inquisitive and see the bigger picture when it comes to making and implementing decisions for the future. In my current role as a Policy Manager, I am able to think critically about the issues at hand and look deeply into the broader issues surrounding those. I have been able to encourage colleagues at work to think using MSF approaches. The MSF has been instrumental in shaping my career, and I value the insights that it has given me.’
