Agnieszka Dutkowska–Zuk is due to complete her thesis autumn. She had an intercalation during the covid period. Her working title is ‘The Future of Data Storage and the Future of Data Need’. This reverses the concern of Hall’s thesis, and looks at the social and cultural needs for digital storage and how these are effected by cultural practices. It enquires into whether the benefits of infinite, low-cost memory justify their development, or whether there are social constraints – or frameworks – on the value of memory. In the thesis, memory is not treated as a question of datum, but as a particular social construct. From this view, speculative design allows various experiential possibilities to be investigated. Findings have been published at Exploring Futures through Speculative Design and at the HumanTech Summit.
