Jon Danielsson will present an Economics Seminar entitled "Risk appetite and economic growth".
Risk Appetite and Economic Growth We investigate the impact of risk appetite on economic growth, using a panel that spans up to two centuries and 74 countries. We propose a new measure of risk appetite, --- \emph{duration of low risk} --- where risk appetite increases the longer a country experiences a low risk environment. A country's local risk appetite positively and significantly affects economic growth, where the impact of global risk appetite on growth is stronger. Furthermore, risk appetite positively and significantly affects capital flows and domestic investment. Such impacts are stronger for emerging economies, those dependent on international capital markets, and for the post-1970s when globalization increases significantly.
