Research Seminar hosted by the Cnetre for Technological Futures

While recent AI advances are often attributed to scaling laws and computational power, these systems fundamentally emerge from human design decisions. As AI capabilities expand, questions arise about the nature and scope of human involvement in cognitive work. Drawing from recent research in autonomous driving and AI's impact on journalism, this talk examines how human roles are evolving within learning systems. Through these case studies, we explore the changing dynamics between human expertise and machine learning capabilities, offering insights into the future of human-AI collaboration.

Speaker

Jeffrey V. Nickerson

Stevens Institute of Technology

Jeffrey's research focuses on how humans and machines work together in creative endeavors such as design. He has recently been applying concepts of learning to the analysis of autonomous driving for the Society of Automotive Engineers. He is currently an investigator in a National Science Foundation funded project called the Future of News Work, which is looking at the effects of generative AI on journalism and related fields.
