Artificial Intelligence (AI) holds the potential to revolutionise individual organisations and transform the way organisations across sectors — public, private, and non-profit — work (together) to tackle grand societal challenges. Through real-world case studies, Professor Angela Aristidou of UCL School of Management and the Stanford Digital Economy Lab provides empirical evidence of the deployment of AI tools in settings that require cross-sectoral collaboration: health, humanitarian aid, and nonprofits. This research reveals in-context governance mechanisms, as well as business and work models in highly-important areas for our societies.

Recent advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies have leaped from the confines of computer labs into our vibrant social, business and organisational fabric. Leaders and members of established organisations – from governments to hospitals and nonprofits – are zealously exploring ways to harness these powerful tools to amplify their intended impact. Today, nearly every organisation is actively experimenting with AI, whether through formal initiatives or informally, within their operations. In the study I will present, I examine the deployment of an open-source AI application into hospitals. This initiative brings together a private technology firm, hospital staff (medical professionals, governance experts, and leadership), and patient and public representatives. This research provides empirical evidence of how AI-driven cross-sector partnerships generate new in-context governance mechanisms.
