A team of marketers from Lancaster University Management School gave children an insight into the world of marketing at a key community event.

Dr Emre Tarim, Lee Francis, and Dr Josiane Fernandes hosted the Marketing Pavilion at Campus in the City 2025.

The team helped youngsters aged between 6 and 13 to design a dream snack, from its ingredients and packaging to its price, and tested their product’s performance using state-of-the-art eye-tracking technology that the Marketing Department uses for research and teaching.

Participants received a Young Marketeer Certificate and activity stickers as a reward for their efforts.

“The Pavilion was a success and it has given us ideas and inspiration for future events and for other engagement and teaching activities,” said Dr Tarim.

The children who took part also picked out "Good Consumption" and "Bad Consumption" elements, summarising their feelings and experiences on the positive and negative aspects of consumption.

“It was really fun making my own snack,” said Euan, 6, who was one of the first children to design a snack. “I really liked making it bright and colourful, giving it a name, and putting lots of chocolate in it!”

Campus in the City is a two-day interactive showcase packed with hands-on exhibits from across Lancaster University. It is a celebration of the wide range of research and teaching at the university and was relaunched in 2024.An adult works on a laptop whiletalking to a child.
