Top award from Microsoft for Lancaster intern
26 June 2014
Lancaster Marketing student Olly Heron has won a prestigious prize from Microsoft during his 12-month placement with the company.
Olly, who is currently a Consumer Product Marketing Intern at Microsoft, has been named ‘Intern Collaborator of the Year’, an award made to “the intern who demonstrates an exceptional ability to work with others, above and beyond the requirements of their role and is passionate about achieving common goals.’
Olly describes the placement year as “a great opportunity for me to cement the learnings from my study at Lancaster. For me, the process started with reading an email from LUMS Careers discussing intern opportunities and they supported me through the whole application process, from CV to interview techniques.”
He will be returning to Lancaster in October to complete the final year of his BA Advertising and Marketing course.
According to Rory Daly from the LUMS Careers team, “all departments in LUMS now offer at least one degree which includes a placement year in industry. Research shows that over 40% of all graduate jobs now go to someone who has already worked with the company and completing a placement year gives a student a demonstrable advantage when it comes to competing for graduate jobs.”
Richard Meek from the Department of Marketing is delighted that Marketing students are performing so well in the workplace. “We believe this is yet another positive outcome of the close collaboration between our department, our students, employers and LUMS Careers.”
