Professor Tarafdar will conduct research on the topic of ‘Information Technology's 'Dark Side': How does it Reduce Employee Well-Being?’

The use of information technologies such as smartphones and email is increasingly causing ‘dark’ and pervasive effects such as techno-stress, technology addiction, work-home blurring and information overload, thus reducing employee well-being.

The research will investigate how individuals use information technologies in ways that lead to these sorts of negative impacts on their well-being. It will build on Professor Tarafdar’s work on stress induced by use of information technologies, techno-stress, for the past several years.

Professor Tarafdar said: “The research is important for practice and impact because a critical management challenge for companies in present times is to help employees use information technologies in ways that avoid these negative effects.”
