Nurai's MSc Project Management dissertation journey
Posted on

The summer term has been particularly challenging due to the weighty decisions surrounding the two optional dissertations in MSc Project Management. As a final task for our Master's degree, we are given a choice between a 'paper-based' and an 'action-based' project to be completed during the summer term.
Why I chose an action-based dissertation
To make my selection, I engaged in extensive discussions with my parents and mentor. If my aim is to pursue a doctorate (PhD) and have a specific research goal in mind, then a paper-based dissertation would be the ideal option. This allows me to delve into a topic of personal interest that I can further explore in my future doctoral research.
However, considering my inclination towards practicality and industry-based experience, I have opted for the action-based project.
During the first week of the summer dissertation, my time was consumed by exploring various company options and conducting online meetings with potential clients. Fortunately, I managed to make a favourable impression on one particular company, and they chose to collaborate with me.
Our team consists of only two individuals, which occasionally poses challenges in terms of task delegation. Although working in a larger team might have been a preferable option, I view this as an exciting challenge and am grateful for this opportunity.
Advice for choosing a dissertation path
Before embarking on your own summer term journey, it is advisable to consider the following questions:
- What benefits can you derive from both action-based and paper-based dissertations?
- When choosing a company, prioritise examining the company's background, sectors, and the project's objectives.
- How can you impress the chosen company? What unique value can you bring to the project?
These questions played a crucial role in ensuring a successful start to my summer term. However, above all else, remember to savour your studies and prioritise your mental well-being. I'm sending you positive and empowering vibes for your upcoming dissertation.
